Feels slightly depressing blogging about dental convention now that classes have started again
Party fun vs lectures.
cue huge sigh.

Dental students' convention was in Melbourne this year
the highlight?
definitely the boat cruise!

was slightly late getting there, dad sped down to the city like a mad man to get me there before the boat left
(misread the time by an hour! dont you hate it when that happens)
extra stressed because of footy traffic.
but made it in time!

theme was an 000 EMERGENCY PARTY. Firemen, surgeons, nurses, police, lifeguards, casulties, you get the idea. Went as a sheriff because i had glow-in-the-dark hand cuffs, but would you believe it, in the rush to get there i left them behind!

Was an incredibly awesome night, had a blast!

Also attended the cocktail party the night after, held at the Melbourne Aquarium. Was tired from the boat cruise (i m getting old), so the night felt a bit flat, but it was very pretty venue. Tons of live fish creep me out though, prefer them on my plate.

i know i ve squished the photos, but wait till you see the ones i ve prepared of Clare and Lee's visit!

maris

Decided to try out Maris for dinner sometime ago
Didnt feel like driving far and sometimes parking in the city is so painful.
Was looking for somewhere closer to our side of town and I felt like some modern italian. So Maris it was!
The restaurant is at 15 glenferrie road, and thank god, parking was a breeze.

Had the 2000 Chateau Imperial Tokaj Aszu. Dessert wine really is my weakness, i can have it anytime of the day, with any dish, in any amount, haha.

Foie gras cannoli


Quail burger, lardo, caramelised onions & cherry tomato. Love lardo! Dont know who here has read the Sword of Truth series, but ever since that ironsmith made lardo for Kahlan in the 5th book, i ve always loved it. Beats butter flat out!

Ocean trout carpaccio, warm smokey potato, wood sorrel & horseradish. Quite yummy, the horseradish was a rather genius touch.

Pork crackling dish. Never been a huge fan of pork, but apparently this was quite good.

Vin santo pannacotta
macerated figs & apricots with almond biscuit ice cream

Three layers of Valrhona chocolate, sweet sherry ice cream, mint & sorrel.

Desserts were great, wasnt too rich and the chocolate was slightly more bitter than usual in my dessert (good thing!), which when taken with the sherry icecream produced the most extraordinary flavour. Was such a similar dish to the dessert i had at Coda that it was hard not to compare the two, but i think i liked the one at Coda more. The brandy icecream was stronger, and i think it had hazelnuts.

Coda had the better chocolate dessert, but the monkey fritters were terrible. Both desserts at Maris were really good. In conclusion, if you want that chocolate roll with sherry/brandy ice cream type dessert, try Coda, if not go to Maris!

Ha ha i m so wise and logical. ;)

i m not uploading photos or blogging yet because i have seriously 946924865 photos to go through, and i have a feeling when i do so i ll be hit by pangs of sadness.

its so nice to have a doppelganger, but not in that creepy Drew Barrymore movie way.

rant

3 am introspective time!
feels so weird to be completely alone, without clare or lee or bri a short drive away
and convention is over, dad has left and i didnt end up buying a puppy

and as usual, as though by some divine law, i cant fall asleep
(its been fine the past month)
and surprise surprise i have to go into uni tomorrow morning.

and my diet has failed.
was so hungry after trying to fast i caved and had sweet corn bread and soup
i am sooo illogically angry with skinny people
well, skinny toned people. not the flabby ones.
if all the skinny toned people were a little fatter my world would be a better place.
it used to be so effortless.
man, age, thou art a heartless bitch.


it just occured to me the number of people i know who have been in the newspaper lately has tripled.
some absolutely amazing (clare's legs! qiu's lips!)
some, not so haha.
which is great for me because i can live vicariously through them
what with being stuck a poor student here in Melbourne.

some of the gossip is so eye popping i sometimes feel i m really missing out being here.
but i know if i were back in Singapore the social politics would drive me insane

although, right now, i am of the thought that being a perfect good little girl is absolutely boring, (not saying i m one btw)
and after talking about our past with my BFFs, i think i was really born quite naughty and now i hunger for the ultimate rock star lifestyle
the whole deal. the 3 c diet, eyeliner and memory loss.
like how when we were 12 we decided our hotel room was not up to standards
and proceeded to 'trash' it and set it alight.
alas, nothing can be more opposite than a staid old DENTIST.

what happened to me!!!
i m going to go nuts this weekend,
if not i just couldnt live with myself being so
so NICE.

i should go back to school and throw my pens at fellow classmates again
make them play catch with me
alternatively i can stand in front of the mirror and practice fake-smiling so i can pretend that everyone fascinates me and their stories are so interesting

i wish i could be more 2 faced. life would be so much simpler.
instead of walking away i can smile and nod angelically
manners are passe
i m sick of trying to always be polite and well brought up
next time, i m going to cuss like a bawdy sailor

oooh and i wish lee was here right now
i want to talk to you
i think i m having quarter life crisis

opps i really did mean to post this sooner
but with the dental convention and Clare/Lee/Dad's visit
i ve completely forgot!

NZ's best cellar, in Taupo. The biggest underground one, and the selection was incredible! It looked traditional but the technology behind it was amazing. See the little glass panel on the floor with the bottles underneath? I want one! They even had a bordeaux room. Love.

My favourite type of accomodation. A ground floor room/apartment opening straight out onto a lake. Best way to wake in the morning!

Had lunch at Huka Prawn farm, prawns there were meant to be amazing as they were reared in the Huka falls- crystal clear fresh water- but werent that great. The prawn chowder was good though, and as you can see, the dining area was lovely, right on the falls


Visited Wai O tapu geothermal wonderland. Very colourful and pretty, though the sulphur smell was strong! Also went to watch the Lady Knox geyser erupt at 10am, though i have no good photos of this. Nothing on the old Faithful, but entertaining nonetheless.

NZ is sooo pretty.

So that concludes the NZ update. I cant get over how pretty the whole place was. Next time, i m definitely going back for a longer trip
